POEM - The Eye-Opening Dream

We brought you into this world

hoping that you would outlive us;

knowing full well the devastation that leaves

along a mind’s backroads

But the lives we lead would never have felt

this full without you

So, in spite of the unavoidable woes

of existence, it is our wish that you

also grow to embrace the barred paradise

one only finds as a parent

We brought you into this world

with little faith left in where it’s headed;

no longer believing we could do enough

to affect the sad model of that desolate future,

far-too-often predicted by the machines

But maybe progress really does

see its way paved by

the young among us outnumbering the old

So, in spite of our shame

at not having fixed

everything wrong with this place

ahead of your arrival,

the fact is that we were

running out of time,

and thought the planet at large

needed no less than you

We brought you into this world

without any notion of changing

who you truly are;

whatever identity you desire

is the person we want you to be

There are plenty who say

we’re foolhardy to love beyond borders

But if we cannot love you

wherever your heart sings loudest,

then you never get the best in us,

even though the best in you

has been ours to enjoy from day one

So, in spite of how sickeningly wild

society’s varied voice may sound

in the darkest corners, please understand

that bringing you into this world

is how we kept those voices

from overtaking us
