POEM - Supers

Some people want to read minds

because they’re too insecure

to be interesting of their own accord

I want to topple the corruption

which pits worker against worker

so that their pockets can be

more readily picked

Some people want to control the wind

because it’s the simplest sense of power

they’ve allowed themselves to imagine

I want to help humanity travel

beyond our singular, solar cradle

so that our spark outlives the Earth;

fanning out among the stars

Some people want to see through objects

because then they’d know what everyone

looks like beneath their clothes

I want to end each call to war

(having bloodied the whole of our history)

so that no one ever has need

of a weapon again

Some people want to slow time at will

because they believe it would save them

from any incoming danger

I want to engineer a less death-prone form

than what we were provided by Mother Nature

so that the mere act of living

feels like a superpower

Some people want their heroes

to entertain them with an existence

they’d never seek for themselves

But I want my heroes

to teach us how we might,

in turn, cause the world to be better;

to eventually return their favor of rescue
